OK,
so now you are at college. What does that really mean to you?
Now that you have gone through the process of researching schools,
applying, interviewing, visiting,...you get the point, what is
there to do?
Hopefully,
you attended some type of Orientation where lots of people spoke
to you and gave you lots of folders, flyers, catalogues, etc.
Go and get them... These pieces (even though they may not have
seemed to be important then) are very, very important for your
success.
Some
of you have come to college as "Undeclared / Undecided"
for your major. I see many students in this situation. You are
not alone. If you want to check out some information on Majors/Careers
follow me.
You
may be receiving financial assistance.
If you have a concern about papers being processed on time, or
if your checks have cleared and attributed to your bill, go and
visit with your school's Financial Aid Office. You will
find their number in one of those pieces of info that you received.
If you applied for, but didn't get any aid, don't give up. Check
out your options.
After
you have moved in, or began your commute, and gone through an
Orientation, exciting things will come your way. If you don't
know what to expect your first year and it is scaring you
(a little) why not find out more about the
first year experience.
How
do you make college
count? There are so many things that you will be learning
about yourself. This is a brand new place in your life where you
can become whomever you want. You may have always had a dream
of being an artist or an actor or a scientist but you never allowed
yourself to think it possible, or your friends would have laughed
at you if you tried something new and ventured out. BREAK out
of your "typical" boundaries. None but yourself can
judge who you are and what you do. If you spend your entire life
trying to make everyone around you happy but you are not being
TRUE TO YOURSELF....... there will always be a question in the
back of your mind, in the softness of your head on your pillow,
etc. Take a CHANCE.
If
you ever need help with ANYthing from school concerns to
social issues, there are always people nearby waiting to give
you a hand.
Some
of the things you need to brush up on are your success
skills. These skills help to make your life easier during
school, and when you graduate. Yes, you will graduate if you stay
true to yourself.
If
you think that you may want to transfer schools, maybe
your school doesn't have the program/major you now realize you
want OR maybe the school itself doesn't feel right to you, transferring
may be a way to go.
If
you are a student who may be a little older than the other "kids"
and have spent some years taking care of others, working, or just
not sure about what you wanted to be...congratulations for coming
back. It is sometimes a bigger risk to be an ADULT
student returning after a few years of not being in school.
For some this is a chosen path, for others life has chose this
for you. There are specific programs in place to help you out.
Not to worry.
